Astoria Area Chamber of Commerce
April 10, 2003
Pres. Beck called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. at the town library. There were 11 members present.
The treasurer’s report showed a current balance of $1448.11. Tim Stevens made the motion to accept the treasurer’s report with Kathleen Behymer seconding.
A motion to approve the minutes of the March meeting as read was made by Marty Bair and seconded by Bonnie White.
The guest speaker for the evening was Jessena Thorne from the ICCS (Illinois Coalition for Community Services). This is a statewide agency that strives to link communities to resources available and to help them organize and be successful in their endeavors. Their services are free and their motto is "Helping Communities to Help Themselves". She will be looking into helping us with economic development endeavors.
Committee Reports:
Economic Development – It was reported that the money that was needed for the Fiber Steel building has not be obtained and is doubtful if it will become available.
Retail and Promotion – The Spring Fling is set for May 2 and 3. And it was reported that the Senior Discount Day is growing. Each participating business is responsible for their own advertising now.
Website – Mr. Lasswell has agreed to continue as webmaster for the same as last year ($150). Someone will be contacting the web host and obtain the information needed to continue with the website.
Parks and Recreation – Yellow bows will be placed on the light poles, the gazebo and various other places in honor of our men in the military.
Cleanup – Everyone was reminded of the all town yard sales on May 16 and 17 with cleanup day being May 19.
President Beck reminded all members that the annual dues are payable by May 1. You may pay your dues to Steve Butler. Mr. Beck also reported that Fulton County would be distributing fliers with information on the West Nile Virus Program. Mr. Beck and Kevin Plate are the contact people for Astoria. If you see a violation or have questions about helping to keep the mosquito population under control you may contact them.
Gary Sheets made a motion to accept the slate of officers nominated by the board of directors. Tim Stevens seconded this motion and all voted aye. Officers are: President – Bob Bridges, V. President – Kathleen Behymer, Secretary – Nancy Carithers, and Treasurer – Steve Butler.
Steve Butler made the motion to adjourn the meeting and Marty Bair seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
